Seriously...is this all just a fad? I mean, aside from the die hards (yes their are people today who still wear BUM clothing, have hair scrunchies and more) this truly could be a fad. What do you all think? Will the 2010's be anything like the 90's? I hate thinking about music as cycles, but I think that is truly what it is.

If it's a fad, then it's a pretty long-lived one considering it's been around for 30+ years, now (give or take, depending on who you think started it).

With so many subgenres becoming over-saturated, there will be a lot of crappy bands out there to weed through, but that's how it's always been. If it seems like it's worse nowadays, I think a lot of that has to do with the internet's power to expose you to things you never would have otherwise been exposed to.

Music is just like any other human creation - 80-90% of what comes out is swill and you have to get through that to get to the good stuff. For better or worse, as bad as the music industry is, it has acted as a filter. Granted, a lot of bands get signed that, in retrospect, should not have been. Conversely, a lot of great bands were unfortunately overlooked and, without the internet, no one outside of their geographic locale ever heard of them. But with the internet, that filter is removed and most of what we didn't get to see in the past that we do get to see now is crap that would never have been signed 20 years ago. Plus, another indirect by-product of the internet and it's ability to make music available at a unprecedented level has spawned a lot of indie labels that are less selective about what they sign.

Good metal will always be made - the bands that have been around for a while will continue to put out stuff, hopefully up to par with previous efforts, while new bands will always be coming down the road and some of them will suck, but once in a while, that band that blows everyone away will arrive to rebuild people's faith in music and human creativity.

That's my 2 cents.

some people do, "grow out of it." they settle down, and sell out... its pretty sad, but in all honesty, if they are so eager to drop the music, i didn't want them to be a part of this culture to begin with. with years to come, many different bands will influence the sound... just look at punk rock, kids nowadays are calling good charlotte, blink 182, and my chemical romance, "punk rock." its not, and it never will be... metal has remained somewhat true to the sound, but there is alot of bands trying to change it... trying to re-invent it. by 2010, things will be different, but not always for the worst.

I think "sell out" is a bit ridiculous. I was into metal as a kid and then got into other stuff. People change, have different experiences, discover things they never knew about before.....that's not selling out, that's life and living. You don't "want them to be a part of this culture"? Because they might start listening to other types of music? What is that all about? Is it so bad to you for someone to broaden their horizons? Give me a break.

As much as I love metal (and that includes some real brutal and evil shit), it's just as nice to chill to Bob Marley or The Roots or Ani DiFranco if the mood hits. If you don't like anything outside of metal, that's cool, but a person is not a "sell out" because they check out music outside of metal. Furthermore, if one is the same person at 24 that they were at 14, then they probably are in need of some inner soul-searching and self-critique (if not some serious therapy). That, or they need to open their door and go outside once in a while.

whoa, i didn't mean anything like that. i was referencing the scene kids, that do it for an "image." a fashion statement. going to a Hot Topic and buying an entire wardrobe there... stores like that are part of the problem, making a fad readily available for kids that will probably grow out of it in a couple years. the people who don't appreciate the music outside of its reputation or "look."
my musical tastes are very similar, i'll listen to bloodbath and dark funeral and the next song will be from sublime or appalachian terror unit. its impossible for me to stick with just one genre.
in the long run it really doesn't matter what you look like or what you're listening to, as long as you remain true to who you really are, and that will definately change through-out the years.

Okay, I get it. Sorry if I misunderstood.

I suppose anyone who gets into metal for some kind of image or something was probably a sell out of a person to begin with. And you know, that must be torturous considering that, as much as I love metal, there is nothing more hellacious than listening to a bad metal band, especially live. I can't imagine not liking the music at all and forcing myself to suffer through it all to be part of a certain clique or fit a certain image. That's either extreme stupidity or extreme dedication. lol

I don't think it's a fad either its just a genre of music that's been around and has gotten a lot hype from various people all over the world. CrossBones
