Anyone here into black metal (the genre, not the Venom album)?

I've always liked some, but never got that into it until recently. Lately, I've been craving more. A lot of that I think has to do with Watain's Sworn to the Dark, which I think is great. Headbang So, I've started to explore a bit more. I picked up a couple used Borknagar CDs and those are pretty good. I picked up Ulver's Shadows of the Sun, which is decent but far from what I expected. Not really black metal.....or metal at all, for that matter.

So, outside of the usual suspects like Dimmu, CoF, Emperor, Mayhem, etc. what black metal bands or CDs can you suggest?

Oh, and BTW, I don't care how good it is, I'm all set with Burzum and Varg Vikernes, so you can leave that at the door. Shame on you haha

Have you ever heard of Mendeed? They aren't a true black metal band, but they do have clear black/speed metal roots. They are Scottish so they have the European sound.

The tracks on their myspace are decent but probably not my favorites, check out the first and last track.

Unfortunately one of their guitarists recently left the band so they will be no more...

I reviewed them back in the day and still like to listen to the CD in my car.

I've heard of them, but never heard their music. I'll check them out.

I did pick up a couple BM CDs since creating this thread...Deathspell Omega's Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice and Immortal's Sons of Northern Darkness. Both are good, especially the Deathspell one, which I've really enjoyed.

Poccolus is pretty good, solid 08 release. Old Wainds is good as well. I am not a huge fan of typical black metal, more a fan of the European flavor...Great band a lot of people hate is Deadlock...hardcore/black metal

I just like them because of their crazy guitar-work. Two lead guitars with synchronized solos is always a good thing for me (considering I play guitar). The lyrical content is pretty meh though... Really its black metal-core more than anything, even showcasing a couple of <gasp> breakdowns.

DJ I think deadlock is even less black metal than Mendeed, although I like them.

check out Akercocke if you get a chance, very intricate/experimental black metal... their old drummer was also in Decapitated. Words that go unspoken, deeds that go undone is one of their best albums. excelent example of a truely unique sounding band, that can still remain brutally hardcore.

Yeah, I have that one and their last, Antichrist. I like both. Talented band. Thanks for the suggestion....obviously, I think it's a good one. ;-)
