Anyone seen this film? If so, what did you think?
It came out on DVD the other day and I watched it last night. I read the book about 11 or 12 years ago and loved it and the soundtrack Eddie Vedder did was one of my favorite CDs in 2007. Anyway, I thought it was good. Just so I don't have to type it again, here's what I wrote to a friend:
"I watched
Into the Wild last night.......it's a pretty low-key film and there aren't a lot of peaks and valleys......you have to be in the mood for an introspective film, but if you're in the right mood, it's good.....and the last 20-30 minutes are some of the most moving i've seen in any film.......there was one part after he learned he had eaten a poisonous plant that would cause him to starve to death that hit me like a brick.......he always felt that truth was the most important thing and as long as there was truth, everything else would take care of itself......he felt that nature was the ultimate unvarnished truth, which was one reason he went out to Alaska.......but anyway, while he's starving and waiting to die, he comes to this realization which he writes down: "Happiness only real when shared." I don't know why exactly, but that hit hard for me......through the last few minutes of the film and for a good 10-15 minutes after, i had a real hard time keeping my composure"
I'm not a very weepy guy, but there are times in certain films that I might well up a bit (and I ain't afraid to admit it! haha). For instance,
Million Dollar Baby was a tough one. But usually when that happens, it lasts for a minute and passes. For some reason, this film, especially the last half-hour, hit me hard and I had a lump in my throat for a good while after.
